Joellen C. Thomas, age 73, of Thornburg, Ark., died Dec. 26, 2009. She was born Jan. 21, 1936, in Pine Bluff, Ark., to the late William J. and Isla Baggarly Commer. Also predeceasing are three brothers, Tommy Commer (Sheila), Rev. Dr. Wm. J. Commer (Frankey) and I.M. (PeeWee) Commer (June); as well as Earl Cauley, father of her children; and late husband R.S. (Bob) Thomas.
Surviving are children, E. Gene Cauley (Luana) of Alma, David Cauley (Sharon) of Little Rock, and Stephanie Winchester (Steve) of Sherwood; grandchildren, Kelsey and Ethan Winchester of Sherwood, Scott Cauley of Wichita, Kan.; stepchildren, Clay Thomas (Debra) of Little Rock, Linda Thomas of North Hollywood, Calif.; and step-granddaughter, Shelby Thomas of Little Rock; cousins, Don Hale of Ashdown, and James A. Williams of Pine Bluff; and a number of nephews and nieces.
Joellen retired as Medical Records Administrator for CARTI St. Vincent. She volunteered at Milam Library, Perryville, and was pianist for Thornburg Baptist Church.
Special thanks are extended to Pat and Robert Thomas, Diedra and Bob Corder, Gary and Kathy Rankin and Dottie England who exemplified Christian care during her illness. Thanks to Milam Library Staff, monthly book club members and the Lunch Bunch, a group of 1954 Pine Bluff High graduates. Joellen was blessed by the encouragement and prayers of her friends at Community Bible Study. Special thanks to D.R. Harris, M.D., to Mariann Harrington, M.D. her Oncologist.
A celebration of Joellen's life will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Thornburg Baptist Church with Rev. Harold Mitchell, her lifelong friend, in charge of the service.
Joellen preferred her flowers while she was living, so in lieu of flowers memorials are requested to Thornburg Baptist Church, Arkansas Chiuldren's Hospital or St. Jude Children's Research Center in Memphis, Tenn.
