Good to hear from you. I've gone through your detective work and I agree,
the circumstantial evidence is strong enough. I think you are right about
the family ties between the Baggarlys and the Lockes. It certainly makes
sense.
Let's hope you get the job. It's always nice to have some time off, but
after a while you want to go back to work ... (even though I'd rather be
doing my research, I still appreciate having a job). Anything close to home
sounds good, less travelling time means more time for genealogy (ha ha).
It took me a while to realize that you are problably interested in Lena
Boer's ancestors as well - after all, Kristin is one of her descendants.
Since I came from Pieter Kommer's first marriage, I never researched Lena's
family other than to find her parents.
So I've been doing some research for you. I should be able to find more if I
have time to visit the Zeeland Archives. Probably in October, the kids have
a week off then and we hope to go to Zeeland during that week. I we do, I'll
take Lena's stuff with me and see what I can find.
In the meanwhile, I'll attach what I have found so far. There is more, but I
haven't translated it into English yet. Someone sent me a whole bunch of
info on the "Graafeiland" family - once I have that sorted out, I'll send it
to you.
If you need sources: go to www.zeeuwsarchief.nl and then to their ISIS
database (it's also available in English), you can check all the marriages
and deaths after 1811. They quote certificate numbers.
Several volunteers have tried to locate Charles Commer for me in 1870, but
no luck. Makes you wonder what the census taker could have made of it ...
Conner, Connor? Or something entirly different because he was living with
another family??
We definitely need Jennie's death certificate for more info on the family,
if only I could find you where/when she died!! The Middletown volunteer that
was helping me must have died, for after his 'don't blow your fuse honey, I
found lots of information for you' I never heard from him again ... I have
mailed several times but got no reply. He was in his 80s so I guess he is no
longer with us ...
I am now trying to find someone else in that area to help me but the one guy
that does some work there still hasn't replied to my e-mails. It looks like
we're not meant to find anything on Charles!
Well, back to work. We'll be gone all next week - just a week to the

The largest church in Zeeland was the Dutch Reformed church (nederduits gereformeerde kerk). There were hardly any catholics or other denominations on the islands. In 1816, the name of the church was officially changed from Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk to Nederlands Hervormde Kerk. Until 1811, practically all baptisms/marriages took place in the Dutch Reformed church. In addition, people would sometimes marry before a civil institution (called Schout en Schepenen) - usually if there was money or land in either family to protect. They would then also make up a testament or will or prenuptials.
In 1796 Napoleon invaded the Netherlands and between 1796-1811 he changed the rules with regard to registration of births/marriages/deaths. The French introduced the Burgerlijke Stand (civil registry). From then on, it was compulsory to marry before a civil servant called "Ambtenaar van de Burgerlijke Stand". People were still married in church but without registering before the Burgerlijke Stand, the church wedding would not be legal.
Before roughly 1811 you will only find christening records, not birth records. These were generally not registered until after 1811 (again thanks to Napoleon).
Because of the bombing of the Middelburg archives in 1941 and the great flood of 1953, many records have been lost. In some cases the records of certain villages and cities (e.g. Vlissingen, Kerkwerve) were entirely destroyed. It is extremely difficult if not impossible to find anything if you're looking for ancestors that came from one of those places. Some records were partially restored by genealogists that made transcripts of records before they were destroyed, but obviously a lot was lost forever.
Zeeland consists of a number of islands. A few hundred years ago, there were more islands. Some of them have been joined by bridges or landfills (e.g. Schouwen and Duiveland were separate islands, and are now one island). Ouwerkerk, Kerkwerve, Zierikzee and Brouwershaven are situated on the isle of Schouwen-Duiveland. Sint Maartensdijk, Stavenisse and Scherpenisse are situated on the isle of Tholen.
